Are your colors/shapes the same price?
All of our "standard" shapes and colors are the same price.
Please contact us for quotes and prices.
Do you do custom work / projects?
Yes!
Custom blown work is quoted on a case by case basis.
Simple color alterations such as changing the color of a lip or leaving something out we are happy to do for you at no charge. More complex alterations or custom colors will require a surcharge assuming that they are possible at all.
Please contact us and we'll talk about it.
What size are your "standard" lights?
Our lights usually run somewhere between 8" to 11" inches in length and 4 1/2" to 9 1/2" in width - all depending on the shape selected.
A middle of the road size and shape is our Straight Taper... It runs about 9" in length and 5" across at the opening. The Slim Jim is usually 10 1/2" tall and 4 1/4" at the opening. A typical Fat Bawb is 8 1/2" tall and 6" at the opening. A Wide Flute is about 8" tall and up to 9 1/2" at the opening. The rest of the shapes fall within those measurements
(note: silhouettes are not to scale).
If I order more than one will they match? Do they have to?
In the spirit of "They are cousins more than twins" your lamps will have the same color proportions, look and feel. We try to blow them all on the same day and use the same team to achieve that. They will match (within an 1/8 of an inch) in size... unless that is not what you want...
Often people order a merry-go-round of different shapes and colors just for fun. Some orders all the shapes will match but the colors will vary - or vice versa. Some orders only the lip wraps will match. Occasionally everything will vary... WHEE!
It's all up to you.
Will my lights look exactly like the photograph on the site?
Color variations, bubbles and small differences in shape and size are expected and are not considered defects, but an added artistic expression.
Each shade is a "one of a kind", hand made piece of art. When you purchase sets of lights, they will match each other, but over time they may not match an earlier version that you have purchased or seen. There can be variations in dye lots and whole formula changes made by our color suppliers that will affect the shade.
Red Oak Glass strives to satisfy our customers in all ways possible, but the artistic inspiration cannot be taken out of the product.
In addition, we cannot guarantee that what we see on our monitor is the same as what you see on yours. We have calibrated our shop's monitor using Windows 7's built-in color calibration tool that you can find here or you can just Goggle calibrate monitor and take your pick.
Are the fixtures included with you lamps? What colors? Can I use my own?
Yes, the price of the lamp includes the fixture. Most people are looking for pendant fixtures and ours are Antique Bronze or Brushed Nickel.
If you would like to use your own fixtures we will discount the price of our lamps by $25 a piece. They need to be the type of fixture that uses a "locking ring" (not the three little screws). Just let us know what size hole we need to drill for you.
Other fixtures, such as table lamps or sconces are available. Check with us!
How low should I hang my lamp?
People seem to like 32"-34" above the table or counter top, but what we recommend is to hang something like a milk carton on a string and live with it for a day... then measure that length. Get tall people and wild gesturers into the action.
How long will it take to get my lights?
It all depends on our schedule. If we can fit your order in right away it should take about two weeks from start to delivery. During show season (summer) it's more like six to eight weeks. At the time you place your order we should be able to give you a more accurate estimate.
"Rush" orders can be arraigned for a premium surcharge.
How are my lights shipped?
Within the US we usually ship FedEx Ground or Home Delivery and the cost will be quoted as part of your order. Faster options, such as Overnight and Express, are available and are quoted on a case by case basis.
International shipping is via USPS and is also quoted on a case by case basis.
Are your lamps blown to order?
Occasionally (especially in person) you will see something on our shelves that was just magically waiting for you.
More often than not, when you order you are purchasing custom fabricated hand blown art glass - made just for you. All sales are final.
Where can we see your lamps in person?
We have several distributors around the country (more all the time!) where you can see our lights in person. You can enter your zip code and see if one of them is near you here.
A great way to meet us and see our lights is to visit us while we're on the road - check out our show schedule.
Of course, you are always welcome to stop by the shop for a visit!
(We love to show off!)
What else is there do if we visit you in Central Point, Oregon?
The Rogue Valley is great place to visit...
Starting with Ashland Shakespeare Festival in the south end of the valley, historic Jacksonville's Britt Festival in the west, gorgeous Crater Lake in the east and finally whitewater adventures on the Wild and Scenic Rogue to the north.
Just across the street from the shop is Lillie Belle Farms one of the "Top 10 Chocolatiers In North America" and the Rogue Creamery, home of "Rogue River Blue", judged best blue cheese in North America (Yum!).
(Coming soon: Our Concierge page with lots more information about fun places to eat, drink, play and stay in Southern Oregon.)
Do you give tours, classes or private lessons?
Yes!
Everyone from Cub Scouts to the Red Hat Ladies have dropped in on us. Give us some warning and we'll discuss what will work for your group. Keep in mind that in the summer that shop becomes unbearably hot by 11am, so we tend to discourage tours in July and August.
Classes and lessons are by arrangement.
Please contact us and we'll talk about it.
Can we have our event at Red Oak Glass?
Yes! We love doing these...
Dinner parties with a catered spread and a private glass blowing lesson.
Potlucks for the whole neighborhood with demos rolling the whole time.
Birthday parties with everyone learning to make their own glass party favors.
Our most moving events are wakes. Everyone gets together to tell stories, dance and nosh a little while we blow urns that have been designed to with the help of all that love and remembrance.
(Stay tuned for our "Events" pages with even more info! Or just ask us)
Do you sell other things besides lights?
Yes, in addition to big installation pieces, in our spare time we blow everything from one-of-a-kind sculptures to lovely vases to chachkies that any grandmother would love. You never know what might be lurking in our display cases.
We also do custom memorial pieces incorporating the ashes of pets and loved ones.
How long have you been doing this?
When Louis got home from Vietnam in 1968 he decided to try something easier. The "American studio glass movement" was in it's infancy and San Jose State University was one of the places that it was happening.
When someone asks "How long does it take to make one of those lamps?" We tell them "40+ years".
Do you ever get burned?
Yes.
Honestly though, we get worse burns in the kitchen and as Louis says "You hardly ever get killed".
Does it get hot in the shop?
Yes.
It is generally about 40 degrees above the outdoor ambient temperature when the shop is "hot" (when we're blowing).
A delight in the winter time, not so much in the summer when the Rogue Valley can hit the 100's in the afternoon. Just something to think about if you're planning to stop in - aim for the morning.
